In 1974 John Lennon needed a cover image and press photos for his new album, but he also wanted to get back to the studio. Bob Gruen, the famed rock photographer known, asked Lennon to put on a white T-Shirt he’d bought on the sidewalk for $5 with “NEW YORK CITY” in bold black type. And the rest is history... Bob cut off the black sleeves with a buck knife, for a tougher effect and then shot the iconic images of Lennon on a sunny rooftop in NYC.
